Le lamantin ouest africain (Trichechus senegalensis, Link, 1975) est un Sirenidae, unique ordre de mammifères herbivores aquatiques. Sa population est répartie le long du littoral de la frontière mauritano-sénégalaise à l’Angola, au Mali, au Niger et au Tchad. Comme la majorité de tous les siréniens, le lamantin ouest africain est menacé de disparition d’où la nécessité de le protéger. Il est le moins connu des mammifères marins à cause de l’insuffisance des données scientifiques ce qui constitue un réel défit pour sa sauvegarde et sa protection. Pour palier cette insuffisance de données scientifiques, des travaux ont été entrepris sur le lamantin ouest africain au Sénégal. Ces recherches ont porté sur la biologie et le statut du lamantin, sur le comportement migratoire dans la Vallée du Fleuve Sénégal et sur les caractéristiques génétiques de l’espèce au Sénégal. Des enquêtes ont été réalisées auprès des populations riveraines sur les connaissances de l’animal puis un suivi satellitaire des déplacements des animaux a été effectué de Janvier à Août 2009. Il ressort de ces travaux que le lamantin est bien connu des populations locales; il a une place de choix dans les cultures des communautés en particulier au Saloum et ce malgré les multiples menaces pesant sur sa vie. Le suivi à l’aide des balises a permis d’identifier les facteurs conditionnant les mouvements de l’animal dans le fleuve et aussi son aptitude à se déplacer sur de centaines de kilomètres. L’analyse génétique réalisée pour la première fois sur des prélèvements du Sénégal, de la République de Guinée et du Cameroun a permis de découvrir trois nouveaux haplotypes, dont l’un n’est pour l’instant, identifié qu’au Sénégal. Ces résultats ne sont que préliminaires et méritent d’être poursuivis afin d’améliorer les connaissances sur le lamantin ouest africain, Trichechus senegalensis. |
