Dotés d‘une nageoire caudale orientée dans le sens horizontal et de poumons, ils remonter jusqu’à la surface pour respirer à l’aide d’évents disposés au sommet de leur tête. Ce sont des animaux à fécondation et gestation internes, allaitant jusqu’au sevrage leurs petits. Ils se scindent en deux sous-ordres : les cétacés à fanons et les cétacés à dents. Le présent travail passe en revue la systématique, l’anatomie, la physiologie, la bioécologie et les techniques d’observation de ces mammifères spéciaux. Il aborde également les organismes impliqués (CBI et ONGs) dans la gestion et la conservation de leurs populations, traite de leur exploitation commerciale et scientifique, tout en listant les menaces pesant sur leur survie et les principales mesures de gestion et conservation mises en œuvre. La position des états africains, ceux ayant une frange maritime notamment (Sénégal, Guinée, Mauritanie, Afrique du Sud, etc.) par rapport à la controverse entre pays et/ou organismes pro-chasses (Japon, Russie, Islande, Norvège, etc.) et anti-chasses (USA, France, Grande Bretagne, ONG, etc.) est le point focal de ce travail. Le point est aussi fait sur l’adhésion de ces états à la CBI, la situation des cétacés dans quelques pays et surtout sur les enjeux de la question baleinière pour eux. Enfin, des suggestions allant dans le sens d’une décrispation du débat entre entités favorables ou non à la chasse des cétacés ont été apportées.
